The Messiah’s Secret – The Vineyard ‘Christ in You’

Evening Service following the Lectionary Isaiah 5: 1-7. Mark 12: 1-12

Isaiah tells us that the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel and the man of Judah.
God put everything in place for the vineyard on the hill to flourish, a wall and hedge around it, a watchtower was built and a pit dug for the wine press.

The Psalmist also wrote of Israel being the vine.
“Thou didst bring out of Egypt a vine, thou didst drive out the nations and plant it. “ Psalm 80: 8-19
The nation of Israel described as a vine when they left Egypt for the Promised Land where the vine was planted, the nation took root in the land of Canaan.
God tended, cared for and pruned the vine as they made their journey towards the Promised Land.

However, Isaiah prophesied Israel’s vineyard would produce wild grapes this was fulfilled in Jesus’ day. ”And he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded sour grapes.” Isaiah 5: 4.

The Parable of the Vineyard
Jesus described Israel as being tenants of the vineyard they were no longer the beloved vine. Jesus reproached the Pharisees for they neglected justice and the love of God; they were no longer producing good fruit.
Justice.
Jesus the true vine looked for justice; he taught that it was right to do good on the Sabbath Day. He acted on compassionate love very often going the extra mile to heal a sick person.
The Pharisees and Lawyers neglected justice they had taken away the key of knowledge; they added extra laws to the Laws of Moses these laws laid a heavy burden on the people, as they earned their righteousness under law. Luke 11: 42-52.
Love.
Jesus taught that the commandments were fulfilled in love: firstly to love God with all your heart, souls, strength and mind and secondly to love your neighbour as yourself. Loving the Lord with all your heart involves all the love we are capable of; with all the soul means giving the whole of our life to the Lord; with all our strength means doing everything to show love to him and with all our mind involves getting to know God especially through his word, for increased knowledge of him brings increased love.
The Pharisees, Sadducees, Layers and scribes their hearts were hardened, for them it was more important to keep the Sabbath day laws than for a person to be healed.
The towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum were also condemned for their failure to repent after they had witnessed great miracles and healing. Luke 10: 13-16

The True Vine
Jesus said that he was the true vine, the root and stem of Jesse, the descendant of King David. Jesus bearing the fruit of God’s kingdom; healing the sick, raising the dead and the poor having the gospel preached to them.
John records Jesus prayer and towards the end of his prayer he spoke of being sanctified by the truth. “They, (his disciples) were not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.” John 17: 16 -19.

Sanctification – set apart for holy use.
Jesus sanctified himself by the truth of what he taught: The Sermon on the Mount Jesus spoke of plucking out and cutting off the offending member that leads us to sin.
Sanctification applies today in our walk in Christ; we are in the world but not part of it.
“The Word of God is living and active, sharper than a two edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4: 12.
We are called to be led by the Holy Spirit abiding in the words Jesus heard from his Father.
The writers of the Gospels remembered Jesus’ words they would be precious to them and a sincere person would want to record them accurately. Luke in particular emphasises to Theophilus that this was a truthful account of the eyewitnesses and ministers of the word that he may know the truth concerning the things of which he had heard from the beginning.

The Tenants of the Vineyard
The owner sent his servant to collect some fruit from the vineyard, but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty handed. Another servant was sent but they wounded him and treated him shamefully. He sent another whom they killed him. Many others were sent some they beat and some they killed.
This is in reference to the prophets that God over many years he sent to convict the leaders and people of their need to turn back to God and repent.

Elijah spoke out against Israel’s King Ahab and Queen Jezebel’s dishonesty. King Ahab and Queen Jezebel desired Naboth’s vineyard, but Naboth would not give or sell his inheritance to them. Jezebel plotted against Naboth, she wrote a letter in King Ahab’s name to the elders and nobles who lived with Naboth in his city, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people; and set two base fellows opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him saying, ‘You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” The elders and nobles of Naboth’s city did as Jezebel had requested in the letter. Naboth an innocent man was killed by being stoned to death. As soon as Ahab heard from Jezebel that Naboth was dead, she encouraged him to go and take possession of the vineyard so King Ahab went and took possession of it. 1 Kings 21: 1-16.
Prophet John the Baptist was killed by King Herod for speaking out against his sin; Herod had married his brother Philip’s wife which was against the law.

Jesus the true vine did not unite himself to the sin of the Pharisees, Sadducees, lawyers and scribes.

Finally the owner sent his son, surely he thought that they would respect his son, but they treated him the same.
God sent his Son Jesus, the Messiah, Israel’s leaders treated him with contempt.

Jesus prophesied his death, “This is the heir, let us kill him and the inheritance is ours.”

The unseen principalities and powers of darkness were hoping that by killing Jesus the devil had a claim on Israel’s vineyard.
Now it becomes clear as to why Jesus separated himself from the sin of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Lawyers. They were influenced by the inherited sin of their fallen nature.

The devil, who knew that Jesus was the Christ, but he did not know God’s plan of redemption through Jesus’ death and resurrection, which secured the victory over the devil’s power over death, sin and causes of sin, resulting in mankind’s fallen nature. Mark 1: 24, 34.

The tenants took the son they had killed and cast him out of the vineyard.
Another prophecy in the parable, Jesus was killed outside Jerusalem’s city walls, the Jews made a sin offering of a red heifer outside the city walls.
This sacrifice was to atone for “death.” its ashes were used for purification rituals and were kept at the gates outside the walls of the city.
“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power over death, that is the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to life long bondage. Hebrews 2: 14, 15

Death has no more dominion over us.
The sin that leads to death has been dealt with by Jesus when he bore our sin on the cross and paid the price for it by lying down his innocent life and in his risen life we see the victory over death.
Through God given faith, hearing or reading, the living words of Jesus are received into the heart, the centre of our being. The Holy Spirit dwelling within us acts upon the words and by a miracle we are changed, our hardened hearts are transformed, made new, we know that death has lost its fear in us and that Jesus is our Lord God and Saviour.

The True Vine – Christ in You
Jesus the true vine, the natural make up of the vine, interpreting the way of abiding in Christ.
“If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will and it shall be done for you.” John 15: 7
The branches are totally dependant upon its life’s source from the main stem and roots and we need the care and attention of the vinedresser to help the vine to produce good fruit.
The branch, the Christian is called to walk in the Spirit and bear the fruit of God’s word so it’s us working with the living word Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit.
A branch is complete, all that is required of it, is to grow and bear the fruit of its own harvest
and it is equal to all the other branches in its composition and description, the abundance of fruit does vary.
A Christian has the potential to be Christ-like using the gifts of the Spirit and is responsible for the working out of our calling in Christ’s body, the church.

The fruit of the vine the grape is widely used to make wine as it has more spirit content when fermented than other fruits.

“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in his love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.”
Love is the sap that rises from the root of the vine to the branches. The Holy Spirit fills each believer with the love of God,
The Holy Spirit’s gift of discernment is given freely to the believer, today more than ever we need this gift of discernment to help us stand against the wiles of the devil. Jesus tells us to ask and you shall receive.

In the parable the vineyard is given to another to bear the fruit of it. When we read Luke’s account of this parable, the others are the Gentiles.
The vineyard is comprised of both Jew and Gentile. The cross breaking down the barrier between Jew and Gentile. Ephesians 2: 11-22.

The Messiah’s Secret
At Pentecost was the first time the Apostles proclaimed that Jesus was the Christ. However, the leaders did not repent and bring the nation to accept Jesus as their true vine, the Christ.

Maybe if Jesus had been stoned to death under law the leaders of the ruling council would have considered that Jesus was the risen Christ. But as we know Jesus was killed by crucifixion which was a Roman execution therefore to a Jewish person God had allowed him to be defiled by the Gentiles which was against the law. The high priest Caiaphas was a Sadducee and they did not believe in the resurrection from the dead. These difficulties proved to be a stumbling block for the Jews to respond to the call as a nation to accept Jesus as the Christ and for them as a nation of priests to take the good news of the Christ to the rest of the world.
The Apostles were setting up the kingdom in Jerusalem in expectation of Jesus’ return with the angels and probably were hoping for a change of heart like that of King Ahab who repented of his sin against Naboth when he heard what Jezebel had done. 1 Kings 21: 25-29.

Counterfeit Vineyard of the Antichrist.
Paul in his letter to the church at Thessalonica he wrote informing them that they had not missed the calling out of the church.
They were suffering persecution and were watching and listening for Jesus calling out his church.
Paul re-assures them that the antichrist has not yet been revealed.
“The lawless one revealed by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false.” 1 Thessalonians 2: 8-12.

Battle of Armageddon
“Angels gather clusters of grapes for the wine press, trodden under the severity of God. Revelation 14: 17-20
This is the battle were the powers of darkness will be defeated and where Jesus reigns on the earth with a rod of iron.

The parable of the labourers in the Vineyard.
The 5 vines represent the five occasions when the owner of the Vineyard went out to hire labourers to work in his Vineyard. At the end of the day the labourers were paid their wages.
A day represents a life span.
A Denarius represents the gift of eternal life, Salvation.

The first labourer represents becoming a Christian at an early age.
The second becoming a Christian maybe as a teenager and so on until the last one were someone who has towards the end of their life become a Christian.
We can not earn the gift of eternal life we can only receive it through faith in Jesus.
It is not about being a good person; we need to accept Jesus as our Saviour to receive the gift of eternal life.
This parable gives us insight into the nature of the Lord showing us his priority of belonging to him.

Jonah
The prophet Jonah lived around 800 BC, during the reign of Jeroboam II. He lived in a town just north of Nazareth in Gath-hepher. Jonah’s name means ‘dove’ which reminds us of the dove was sent out from the ark by Noah to find evidence of dry land and returned with an olive leaf. Genesis 8:10, 11. The Holy Spirit was sent into the world at Pentecost.
Jonah was sent by God to Nineveh to preach against their wickedness that was before God.
However we read that he did not want to go to Nineveh. Put yourself in his shoes, Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian Empire, it was like asking someone to go to Moscow during the cold war and tell the atheist leaders that God was against their sin. God was asking Jonah to do something big. In his humanity he was reluctant to go.
Instead he went and boarded a ship heading for Tarshish. Soon after setting sail a storm blew up, as a result of taking on water they threw items overboard in an effort to save themselves and the boat. The sailors assessed their situation by casting lots, the lot fell on Jonah. Casting lots was quite a common amongst the nations to discern the outcome of a situation. The Hebrews used Urim and Thummim to discern God’s will. On the underside of the High Priest’s breastplate was a pouch in it was kept two pebbles one white the other black these were the Urim and the Thummim. Exodus 28: 30.

Today we discern what the will of God through Godly wisdom or a word of scripture prompted by the Holy Spirit or a word of prophecy through the gift of prophecy. We do not cast lots.

When the lot fell on Jonah, he owned up to the sailors what his God had called him to do, to take a message to the city of Nineveh which he had not fulfilled. He offered them a solution to throw him overboard, but the sailors were reluctant to offend Jonah’s God, so they tried to row to the shore, but it was to no avail, the storm grew worse. In desperation they threw Jonah overboard, as he fell into the sea a whale swallowed him whole, as a result he storm abated. He spent three days and nights inside the whale then the fish vomited him out onto dry land.

In this account we can discern the cross of Jesus.
Jonah had turned away from God, but he could not hide, he recognised his sin as it was brought to light. To save the sailors and the ship he was prepared to die. He died inside the whale and God resurrected him as he was vomited out on to dry ground.

When we recognise our sin against God, we realise that Jesus was prepared to lay down his life for you and me, so through faith in what Jesus has done for us, just as God raised Jesus from the dead so he raises us into his newness of life which is eternal. This act of God transforms the way we think feel and behave. We realise that God the Father loves all people, he loves the sinner but hates the sin.

It is only as we know about sin, that we seek to be saved from it.
We read that God asked Jonah to go again to Nineveh, this time to tell them to repent or after 40 days the city would be destroyed. Jonah went and gave the message as a result the King brought his people to repentance in sackcloth and ashes.

Maybe he had been persuaded by a previous prophecy that Jonah saw fulfilled; the land of Hamath would be restored to Israel. 2 Kings 14: 25

Jonah’s displeasure
Instead of being pleased and glad with Nineveh’s repentance Jonah was displeased, he was angry. Theologians say that it was because his prophecy the destruction of the Assyrian city of Nineveh was not fulfilled.

Why was Jonah displeased?
I believe that his displeasure and anger arose from jealousy, which is another part of this prophecy given to us in the life of Jonah.

The first part
The life and witness of Jonah reflects the sign Jesus gave to the scribes and Pharisees
Jesus spoke to the scribes and Pharisees giving them a sign, the sign of Jonah.
“For as Jonah was three days and nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” Matthew 12: 40, 41.
Jesus fulfilled the sign: Two of Jesus’ followers were travelling to Emmaus when a stranger joined them and walked with them. As they walked the disciples spoke to the stranger about the events that had recently taken place at Jerusalem saying, “And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him (Jesus) up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, and who said that he (Jesus) is alive.” Luke 24: 20-23
Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day.

The Messiah’s Secret
Cleopas and the other disciple state that they were not aware that the Messiah had to die before he could be received by the nation as their Messiah.
“And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him (Jesus) up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel.” They were not aware that Jesus had to be raised from the dead before he could be received as their Christ, even though he had told them several times that he would be raised from the dead, but it was hidden from their understanding. “For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon; they will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise.” But they understood none of these things; this saying was hid from them, and they did not grasp what he was said.” Luke 18: 32-34
On the road to Emmaus, the stranger replied, “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” Luke 24: 26,27.
Jesus opened up their understanding to the scriptures that proved he was the Christ.

Continuing Jesus’ prophecy in Matthew 12 the King of Nineveh had brought the city of Nineveh to repentance. “The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.”
Jesus foretold of his rejection by the Jewish leaders. At and after Pentecost when the apostles proclaimed Jesus for the first time that he was the Christ, the Jewish leaders instead of bringing the nation to repentance they rejected Jesus as their Messiah and later were jealous of the Gentiles who accepted Jesus as their Saviour.

The second part
Jonah’s response to the Gentiles shows that he was jealous because the Assyrian people were loved by God, who he regarded as his enemy.

This was prophetic when we read of the jealousy of the Jews when the Gentiles accepted Jesus as their Messiah. God’s love for the Gentiles not just of the people of a city but every person in every nation of the world.

At Antioch in Pisidia, Paul and Barnabas were asked by the Gentiles to tell them about Jesus.
“The next Sabbath the whole city gathered together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and reviled him. and Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.” Acts 13: 44-46
The Gentiles brought into the New Covenant.

Jonah’s jealousy instead of being glad that the Assyrians had repented he constructed a booth, a shelter made of branches to watch over Nineveh. We read that a plant grew up alongside of him, this must have raised his expectations as it gave him shade from the sun’s rays. But a worm destroyed the plant. This is a picture of what jealousy does it eats away at a person’s heart. It is destructive. Jonah was so affected by his jealousy that he wanted to die.
“Set a seal upon your heart for love is as strong as death jealousy is as cruel as the grave.” Song of Songs 8: 6

Jonah’s pity for the plant, he was thinking of the shade that it gave him. The Lord pointed out to him that the plant grew in a night and perished in a night. Jonah had no part to play in how the plant lived or died.
But he had a part in saving the people of Nineveh with God by taking God’s message of repentance to them.
For us today we have a part in working with the Lord taking the good news of God’s saving grace to the people of our community. May we have the courage to pray for the Lord to give us a heart felt burning love, his love for how feels about people that are outside of the Christian faith.

The Messiah’s Secret – Children at Play in the Market Place

It has become a tradition at Wimbledon that strawberries and cream are almost as important as the hallowed turf. This year, each day 8,6165 punnets of Kent strawberries were consumed.


Jewish traditions passed down the generations; Jesus refers to traditions when he said, “But what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling their playmates, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’” Matthew 11: 16, 17.

The children at play in the market places were imitating their parents who probably played their pipes at weddings and feast days, and wailed and cried at the homes of the families of those who had died. Matthew Henry Commentary page 58
Jesus draws our attention to the children who would not join in the dancing to the playing of the pipes.

First of all lets look at the children who were dancing; they were the Jewish people who were eagerly looking for the coming of the Messiah, who sat listening to Jesus expound the scriptures, while others brought their sick to be healed by him.
Also there were those who stood by the roadside welcoming Jesus with joy, as he entered Jerusalem riding on a colt the foal of an ass. They shouted out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel. Hosanna to the Son of David! Hosanna in the highest!” I don’t think that they realised that they were fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah. “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo your King comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass.” Zechariah 9: 9.
We understand when we read John’s account about this occasion that a lot of those people waving their palm branches had earlier been with sisters Mary and Martha consoling them in the Jewish tradition, wailing and crying, after the death of their brother Lazarus. But as we know it was not for long, when Jesus arrived he prayed to God his Father and Lazarus was brought back to life after being dead for four days. Even today I’m told it is medically impossible to be resuscitated after being dead for so many days.

Others in the crowd had heard from these witnesses of the great miracle that Jesus had performed. John 12: 17,18.
Jesus was referring to the children who danced, as the people who recognised him as their Redeemer King.

But also in the crowd were some Pharisees and they shouted to Jesus, “Teacher rebuke your disciples.” Luke 19: 39
These were the people who were like the children who would not join in the dancing to the pipes.

Jesus healed people on the Sabbath Day, as a result the Pharisees saw Jesus as a man who broke the Sabbath Day Laws. Jesus responded by saying it was right to do good on the Sabbath Day. I also believe that the Pharisees heard a lot of laughing coming from amongst Jesus and his friends. Jesus full of the joy of life, which I do not think the Pharisees would have approved of.

Jesus out of love for the Pharisees and all of the people he said, “Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11: 28

Jesus was asking the Pharisees to listen to him, but they would not, instead they laboured over their rules of law and as a result were weighed down by them.
The Jewish person earned their place in the kingdom of God by keeping the law. Jesus was peeling away the laws that the Pharisees had added over generations to the Laws given to Moses by God. “The Messiah’s Secret” page 99

Jesus in the parable of hiring labourers to work in the vineyard makes the point of the labourer not gaining through the amount of work that person had done, even those who had borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. Matthew 20: 1-16

I’ve met Christians who labour for our Lord God, but are burdened by keeping the commandments as a set of rules. It reminded me of the days when we went camping. Our car was on its knees with the weight of camping gear we carried.
Our Scout Leader put together a short sketch, were we made the comparison between the heavy burden and the light weight burden using camping equipment. He read from the old rule book and asked his scouts to bring in their camping equipment; a huge bag containing a tent, bags containing poles, pegs and guy ropes. Calor gas for cooking and a stove, mats and sleeping bags, tilly lamp and other bits and pieces.
Then one of the Wardens came in with a haversack and a small bag. Inside his haversack were the sleeping bag and mat, cooking gear, water carrier, and in the small bag, to our amazement it contained a tent. They errected the tent fitting together the metal rods that formed a half circle which was then attached to the bedroom, lastly an outer fly sheet was placed over the frame.

The rule book and the heavy old camping equipment were made obsolete by the lighter more flexible camping equipment. The comparison making the point the Pharisees struggled to keep the law they were heavily burdened by them. Whereas Jesus released people from generations of added laws by the Pharisees.
Even in more recent times the Jews have added laws like switching on an electric light on the Sabbath Day is not allowed. “The Book of Leviticus” by Charles R Erdman

Jesus wants us to be imitators of him; he fulfilled the law in love. There is no heavy burden in love; we are called to walk in love, love that comes from the Spirit of God.

“Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7.

Jesus wants us to enjoy labouring in his kingdom. Graham Kendrick’s hymn “Teach me to Dance, “ expresses so well the joy and excitement of being a Christian.

Teach me to dance to the beat of your heart
Teach me to move in the power of your Spirit
Teach me to walk in the light of your presence
Teach me to dance to the beat of your heart

Teach me to hope in the day of your coming

Prayer
Lord our prayer is that you would teach us to dance to the beat of your heart, to move in the power of your Spirit, to the tune of your grace. May we be attentive to your word to us and in response out of love, may our movements express our willingness to do your will, so our whole being will praise you and glorify your name. Amen.
